E. M. Forster was one of the greatest novelists of the twentieth century, author of such acclaimed and much-loved books as A Room with a View, Howards End and A Passage to India. Yet in many ways his life has remained an enigma.

His fame rests largely on his novels Howards End (1910) and A Passage to India (1924) and on a large body of criticism . Biography. The British novelist and literary critic E. M. Forster was born on New Year’s Day 1879 in London. His architect father died young, leaving Forster and his mother enough money to be comfortable for the rest of their lives.

After an education at Tonbridge School and King's College, Cambridge, he spent a year travelling in Europe. On his return to England in 1903, Forster taught Latin at the Working Men's College in London. Two years later Forster moved to India where he worked as a personal secretary for Mahaharajah of Dewas. This resulted in his novel, A Passage to India. When he returned to England he wrote many critiques and articles but never wrote any more novels. E. M. Forster died on June 7, 1970.
